How to maintain your Silver and Amber Jewellery
Jewellery is an integral part of dressing up for every woman. Every dress is bought accompanied with accessories and most importantly matching jewellery. Silver being a relatively affordable metal features high on the jewellery list of most women. Also as silver is a relatively easy metal to mould, it is available in a variety of designs. Thus silver is an affordable and adorable metal and silver jewellery is preferred the world over. However silver jewellery needs to be maintained well in order for it to keep looking good.Silver jewellery gets oxidized over time and turns black. This takes away the silver sheen from jewellery and makes it appear dark and lack luster. Many chemical solutions are available in the market including silver polish in order to keep the jewellery glistening. However these chemicals tend to form a layer over the jewellery and it is not advisable for the skin to be exposed to these chemicals for an extended period of time. Thus it is advisable to use silver polish only in dire need and not as a preferred method of maintaining silver jewellery.
In order to maintain the value of silver and to ensure all the metal does not get oxidized, it is very important to adopt appropriate methods to preserve the silver jewellery. Also wearing silver jewellery with darkened areas can be an embarrassing experience and may spoil the whole look. It may also be perceived to be a sign of laziness and negligence in the wearer and thus it is very important to maintain silver jewellery.
Many alternative household techniques exist to keep silver jewellery lustrous as ever. One such technique involves soaking silver foil in water for some time. It is then to be dipped in this mixture. This process makes the dark spots on the jewellery vanish and makes it look new and polished.
Another household technique is to rub powdered ash on the silver jewellery. The ash removes the darkened areas in the silver jewellery and makes it appear new and shining. Powdered ash is easily available in the market and being a by product has almost negligible side effects. Also silver jewellery must be kept away from water as far as possible. Water takes away the new luster of the jewellery and makes it appear old.
Amber jewellery too is often embedded in silver. Amber being very sensitive needs to be maintained well. The best way to preserve Amber jewellery is to keep it wrapped in velvet or satin cloth. This ensures it’s free from scratches and remains well maintained. Also satin being a soft material does not rub against the jewellery and spoil it in any way. Amber jewellery must also be exposed to harsh perfumes or chemicals and hence care must be taken to ensure that harmful chemicals are kept away from it.
